Kaylee stretched then opened her eyes. She saw Korbin setting there watching her. “Are you watching me sleep?”
“That is not creepy at all.”
She sat up and saw what he had in his hand.
“Is that the file from the game?” She groaned when he nodded his head. “I have created a monster.”
He laughed and swatted her leg with the file. “We are going to tackle this thing today, if you feel up to it.”
She sat up and reached for the file.
“This can wait until after I have been fed breakfast and had a shower.”
He laughed and went to the kitchen to fix her some eggs and toast while she headed for the bathroom.
Her breakfast was ready when she came out of the bathroom. The file sat on the table between the two of them.
“We can get started on it. I can eat and work at the same time.”
Korbin opened the file and looked at the first page. “This looks very interesting.”
“So this is the commitment papers for Lloyd McGowan?”
Korbin looked at the paper and nodded. “Looks like it.”
“Involuntary commitment at the L. F. O’Brien Asylum in New York. His mother had him committed.”
Kaylee pointed to the dates at the top of the paper. “Right before his birthday too. That had to suck.”
They looked over the first page of the file.
“No drug abuse and no past hospitalizations. It does say that he may have a neurological disorder though. It also says he is sometimes violent.”
Korbin flipped to the next page.
Kaylee pointed to the family history section. “Alcohol or substance abuse and violence. Do you think that maybe one of his parents was abusive?”
“If so, maybe the asylum is the best place for him. Especially since it also says he is a danger to himself.”
Kaylee nodded and flipped to the next page.
“The day after he is officially admitted, he attacked the janitor. This is also the day after his 26th birthday.”
Korbin sighed and shook his head. “Crappy birthday made even worse. It says he ended up locked in his room.
Korbin looked at the page on the opposite side of the file. “This is about a month later. Says he was being difficult and refusing to go to bed then got violent with the orderlies. He was placed under close supervision.”
Kaylee pointed to one of the lines. “It also mentions an abusive father.”
She looked at the next page.
“Almost a month later, he gets in a fight with someone in the exercise yard. This man likes to fight.”
“Those mutterings make no sense.”
“They are usually important to the person though.” Korbin pointed that out then looked at the medical report again. “I wonder what gave him the cut on his chest. Just smacking someone wouldn’t do that.”
Kaylee pointed to the next report. “He is back in the medical ward the next day with additional injuries. Those scratch marks on his arms and the contusions on his arms and chest are probably from the day before. They are listed on both reports. The only thing really new on this one is to his head.”
“It says he may have hit his head on the wall.”
“That’s possible. I have felt like doing it myself many times after a conversation with you.”
Korbin looked over at her and frowned. “What do you mean by that?”
“Nothing, dear.” Kaylee turned the page to the next report.
“Six days later they have decided to medicate and quarantine Lloyd. They are going to check on him every hour.”
“And leave him there for three months. How nice of them.”
Kaylee looked at the next report and frowned. “This one isn’t about our new friend Lloyd. It’s about some woman named Lilian.”
Korbin read the report and frowned. “That poor girl.”
“This has to be the murder that JWJ mentioned in his letter. This is the one we have to solve.”
Kaylee nodded and took her empty plate to the sink. She washed it quickly then went back to the table. She read over the report again. “She was raped, beaten, and stabbed.” She pointed to part of the report. “She was on birth control.”
She looked up at Korbin. “If she was in an asylum, why would she need to be on birth control? Was she having sex with someone in there? Another patient? A staff member?”
“Look at the dates, Kaylee. It was a week after they locked Lloyd away in his room. Last time I looked at a calendar, a week is not as long as three months.”
She looked at that thinking about it. “So Lloyd could not have done it. He was medicated and quarantined when Lilian was killed.” She got up and walked to the computer. She pulled up Google and typed something into the search box.
“What are you doing, honey?”
“I am checking out that drug they gave Lloyd. This says that it causes tiredness and a bunch of other stuff. It is used to treat schizophrenia.” She read a bit more before something caught her attention. “One of the side effects is impotence and lack of sperm production.”
Korbin listened to what she said then looked at the autopsy report for Lilian. “If the medication had been given to him a week earlier, it had time to take affect. If it causes impotence, then there was no way that he raped Lilian and left semen. It was definitely someone else who killed her.”
Kaylee nodded as she walked back to the table. “I agree. It was not Lloyd. He was framed for her murder.”
She grabbed the file and looked at the next item.
“Thirty years later. There’s our dear friend George Madson again.”
“It sounds like this Dr. Richter dude is really wanting to get rid of Lloyd for some reason. He’s sending him to another facility.”
Korbin looked at Kaylee to find her laughing about something. “What is so funny?”
“It is most likely nothing, but look at the name of Dr. Richter’s facility and look at the name of Madson’s.”
Korbin looked at the two but didn’t notice anything. “Okay? What am I missing?”
“The first letters of each are the same. LFOA.”
Korbin looked then shrugged. “Interesting, but not really funny.”
Kaylee rolled her eyes and sighed. “You really are no fun and have no sense of humor. I hope our daughter gets my fun side and your eyes.” She turned the page and looked at the last item in the file. “So good ol’ George wants to take Lloyd off the no sex juice and make him talk.”
They closed the file thinking about the things they learned in it.
“Lloyd is a violent schizophrenic who has attacked a few people, but it was impossible for him to have raped and killed Lilian.”
